Shaw Centre
Saskatoon, SK

The Shaw Centre is Saskatchewan’s premier aquatic centre. This facility is positioned between two of Saskatoon’s new high schools – Tommy Douglas Collegiate, and Bethlehem High School, both of which were also engineered by Daniels Wingerak Engineering Ltd.

In addition to sharing some common space with the high schools, the mechanical systems were also configured to share aspects of the mechanical systems.

The Shaw Centre features include:

  • Ten lane high performance 50 m competition pool
  • Six lane 25 m warm up pool
  • Competition diving
  • Seating for 500 spectators
  • Family pool with zero-depth shallow end, water slide and other family-friendly features.
  • Hot tub

The mechanical system features an innovative heat pump system that recovers the heat of the dehumidification system and transfers that energy into heating the pool water. Excess heat from the process is used to contribute to the heating requirements of the adjoining high schools. This excess heat also was used to heat the pool air in the winter, and preheat the domestic hot water.

The mechanical system also incorporates high efficient condensing boilers and a low temperature distribution system that maximizes boiler efficiency.

Heat recovery was incorporated throughout the facility. The air handlers used a combination of fixed plate and heat pipe heat recovery. Warm shower drain water.

This project received the Brian Eckel Award of Excellence from the Consulting Engineers of Saskatchewan for its innovation.
